Glorified Rice Recipe
On these scorching hot Summer days, cool summer desserts like this delicious Glorified Rice will be received with delight by everyone. Glorified Rice is actually an old, traditional recipe made popular in the Midwest.
I first tried it in the late 1970’s, when my late mother-in-law introduced me to it. It was love at first bite! Growing up in Laredo, Texas, I had never tasted anything so rich and creamy and cool.
Glorified rice is one of those wonderful pot luck favorite recipes that I’m happy to say can be found at church socials, office luncheons and pot luck dinners.
The Search For A Glorified Rice Recipe
Years ago, after my mother-in-law had passed away, I was craving some glorified rice for dessert but I couldn’t find my handwritten copy of the recipe in the old envelope box where I still have a few handwritten jewels ‘filed away.’
So not being able to find my own copy among my recipes, I mounted an internet search over several weeks until I found what I wanted. Why did it take me weeks to find another recipe for glorified rice?
I kept getting distracted over all the delicious variations of this and other cold dessert salads. Many of the recipes I found were very similar, as is usually the case.
For our purposes though, I narrowed the recipes down to a quick version.
1 small pkg Jello gelatin, flavor of your choice
1 8 oz. tub of Cool Whip
2 cups cooked rice
1 small can crushed pineapple
3/4 cup walnuts or pecans
1 small jar maraschino cherries
1/2 pkg mini marshmallows, multi-color
Assembling Your Glorified Rice
Prepare your gelatin according to the package directions. Let it chill and set while you work with the rest of the ingredients.
In a large bowl, mix together the cooked rice, miniature marshmallows, Cool Whip, pineapple, and nuts. You can add chopped maraschino cherries now, or you can use the cherries to decorate when unmolded.
Add the gelatin that has set and mix.
Fold the mixture into your gelatin mold, pressing lightly to remove any air pockets.
Refrigerate for at least an hour to let the gelatin set again.
Differences Among Glorified Rice Dessert Recipes
One of the biggest differences among the Glorified Rice recipes was using long grain rice or Minute Rice. Personally, I learned it with Minute Rice. I would have to try it with long grain rice to see what the difference is. To this day, I never have. To me, the texture is different between cooked long grain rice and cooked Minute Rice so I’ve never been tempted enough to try it.
Don’t get me wrong, I use long grain rice to make my rice pudding. Glorified Rice just seems to call for that sort of spongier (is that really a word?), sort of chewier Minute Rice.
Another major difference was using whipped cream or Cool Whip. Some of the recipes I found explained how to make whipped cream from heavy or whipping cream. In fact, the recipe video I’ve included on this page, illustrates making whipped cream.
What also surprised me about the recipe in the video is that they didn’t have gelatin in theirs. When my mother-in-law made her Glorified Rice, she made it in a mold and it was lovely and colorful. That just identifies it as Glorified Rice to me. If it won’t mold, it’s rice pudding in my opinion.

Try Some Of These Delicious Variations
Desserts with creamy, delicious ingredients, fruit and nuts are my very favorites, especially cold dessert salad recipes like this one. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I have. I’m just happy that I found it again.
If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, use your imagination to try some yummy variations. For example:
use prepared pudding instead of Jello,
add coconut if you like,
switch the pineapple for mandarin oranges,
add cottage cheese…
or softened cream cheese,
Or try all of those! YUM!!
